Real World FLIR – The Podcast

The sUAS News Podcast series carries on its long tradition of interviewing and learning from experts in the unmanned technology field, and, in this instalment, we learn about FLIR products and remote sensing.

Our guests are Randall Warnas, Global sUAS Segment Leader FLIR, and Garret Bryl, UAS Pilot for the Joshua Fire and Public Safety UAS Response Team (PSURT). We also got the inside scoop from our own resident co-host and drone SAR master, Gene Robinson. Gene has been using FLIR products for SAR (Search and Rescue), firefighting, and scientific research applications with law enforcement, nonprofits, universities, and public agencies like NIST and FEMA for over a decade!

We got a brief history of the FLIR company and the evolution of the technology for small UAS. While on the subject we talked about the acquisition of Prox Dynamics and the Black Hornet system as well as the process for obtaining their BVLOS waiver. Drone TV watchers may remember that we got a flight demonstration of the Black Hornet system when we were in Oslo Norway.

The Black Hornet system is an actual 16-gram “nano” helicopter (with a swash plate, a FLIR sensor that can operate in the wind and rain).

I can say, that is one of my new favorite episodes and if you want to find out what these capabilities afford those using drones in the field, then this is an episode that you can’t miss.
